Primarily correspondence and ships' papers related to two members of the Scovell family of Saybrook, Connecticut and their coastal and West Indies trade. Correspondents include Noah Scovell's sons Noah, Lewis, Amos and Seabury and his brother Ezra. Ships' papers include invoices, bills, bills of exchange, correspondence and customs documents for such vessels as the Peggy (Brig), Nancy (ship), Dolphin (Brig) and Peacock (Brig).

Noah Scovell (alternately spelled "Scoville" or "Scovil") was born in Saybrook, Connecticut (now Essex), around 1759, the son of Noah Scovell (1732-1782) and Anna (or Hannah) Pratt (ca. 1732-1815). He and his wife, Desire Pratt (ca. 1759-1819), had five children: Noah (1781-1833), Louis (1783-1806), Seabury or Sebra (b. 1785), Amos (b. 1787), and Maria (1789-1834).
